1962 Route

Council House to Chapelfields

From the Council House via High Street, Hertford Street, Warwick Road, Spencer Road, Dalton Road, Broadway, Belvedere Road, Earlsdon Avenue, Queensland Avenue, Allesley Old Road and Grayswood Avenue to the terminus at the junction with Westbury Road.  Known terminus details from personal recollection:

  • "All passengers alight here" in Grayswood Avenue just before the junction with Westbury Road;
  • Bus turned into the throat of Westbury Road and then pulled over to the opposite side of Westbury Road for layover and pick-up outside the Westbury Road Shops.

Council House to Stoke Heath

From the Council House via Earl Street, Jordan Well, Gosford Street, Far Gosford Street, Walsgrave Road, Clay Lane, Mercer Avenue and Heath Crescent to the terminus at Valley Road.  Known terminus details from personal recollection of CWK205 member:

  • "All passengers alight here" in Valley Road just before the junction with Blackberry Lane;
  • Bus turned in triangular junction and then pulled forward to opposite side of Valley Road for layover and pick-up in Valley Road, just South of the junction with Blackberry Lane.

1962

Grayswood Avenue (adjacent to Allesley Old Road), Maudslay Hotel, Hearsall Common, Earlsdon Library, Warwick Avenue, Dalton Road, Railway Bridges, Council House, Bramble Street, Swan Lane, Hastings Road and Heath Crescent Post Office.

History of the Route

Pre-1926

Service 1 was the first bus service commissioned by Coventry Corporation Transport.  Because it was the only service at that time it it was not designated as Service 1.  The service was originally introduced in March 1914, running between Stoke Heath and the Central Fire Station via the Council House.  It was suspended in September of that year when the War Department requisitioned all of the buses and reintroduced in November 1919 using the same route as that described for 1926, originally terminating at North Street and extended to Wyken Way in 1921.

1926

Already in existence from Stoke Heath (Wyken Way) to Hearsall Common via Heath Crescent, Mercer Avenue, Barras Green, Clay Lane, Walsgrave Road, Gosford Green, Far Gosford Street, Gosford Street, Jordan Well, Earl Street, Hertford Street, Warwick Road, Spencer Road, Dalton Road, Broadway, Belvedere Road and Earlsdon Avenue.

September 1928

Extended westwards from Hearsall Common via Queensland Avenue and Allesley Old Road to the Maudslay Hotel and then along Maudslay Road and Whoberley Avenue to Glendower Avenue.

March 1932

Terminated at the Maudslay Hotel, with the introduction of Service 11 to Glendower Avenue.

January 1938

Stoke Heath leg extended from Wyken Way to Valley Road.

October 1946

Chapelfields leg extended from the Maudslay Hotel to Grayswood Avenue.

December 1950

Chapelfields leg extended along Grayswood Avenue to Westbury Road.
