Service 20

Alternate short services from Broadgate to Longford Church except in peak periods.
Peak period and Saturday: every third service through to Coventry Railway Station.

Monday to Thursday: every 6 minutes
Friday: every 6 minutes
Peak Period: every 4 minutes
Evenings: every 6 minutes
Saturday: every 3½ minutes
Sunday: every 6 minutes (reduced service before noon)

Service 20A - All Services: every 20 minutes (reduced service before 10.00 am)

1962 Route

Coventry Railway Station to Bedworth

From Coventry Railway Station via Park Road, Warwick Road, Hertford Street, Broadgate, Ironmonger Row, The Burges, Bishop Street, Leicester Row, Foleshill Road, Longford Road then

(a) Service 20 to Bedworth continuing along Longford Road, Bedworth Road and Coventry Road, terminating in Bedworth Market Place.  Probable terminus details from road layout:

  • "All passengers alight here" just before Bedworth Market Place;
  • Bus turned in the Market Place and then pulled forward for layover and pick-up in High Street.

(b) Service 20 short services* turned at Longford Church.  Probable terminus details from road layout:

  • "All passengers alight here" opposite Longford Church;
  • Bus reversed Longford Square, then turned right into Longford Road for layover and pick-up.

(c) Service 20A* to Manor House via Windmill Road, Alderman's Green Road and Almond Tree Avenue, terminating at Honeysuckle Drive.  Probable terminus details from road layout:

  • "All passengers alight here" in dedicated terminus at the junction of Honeysuckle Drive with Almond Tree Avenue;
  • Layover and pick-up at terminus.

* Service 20 short services and Service 20A ran to and from Broadgate and did not run to Coventry Railway Station.

All services returned to Broadgate from Bishop Street via Hales Street and Trinity Street.  Service 20 returned to the station directly into Eaton Road from Warwick Road.

Pre-1961

Broadgate, Harnell Lane West, Lockhurst Lane, Foleshill Garage then:

(a) Longford Church, The Black Horse and Black Bank (to Bedworth);

(b) Longford Park School (to Wood End).

1962

Broadgate, junction of Bishop Street with Leicester Row, Eagle Street, Lockhurst Lane, The General Wolfe public house, Beresford Avenue, The Wheatsheaf Inn and New Inn Bridge then:

(a) Service 20 - Longford Church, Iron Bridge, The Lord Raglan Inn, The Cedars and Park Road;

(b) Service 20A - Barston Close.

History of the Route

November 1940

Introduced as a new Service to replace Tram Service 1 to Bedworth after the tram routes were abandoned because of air raid damage.  Service 20 ran between Coventry Railway Station and Bedworth market place, presumably via Eaton Road, Warwick Road, Hertford Street, Broadgate, Cross Cheaping/The Burges, Bishop Street, Leicester Row, Foleshill Road, Longford Road, Coventry Road and Bedworth High Street.

November 1955

Eaton Road became one-way.  Return from Coventry Railway Station via Manor Road and St Patrick's Road.

January 1957

Service 20A diverted from Longford Road to Honeysuckle Drive (destination signed as Wood End) via Windmill Road, Hall Green Road and Almond Tree Avenue.

May 1959

Service 20A destination renamed Manor House, terminating at the City end in Broadgate.

June 1962

Southbound services diverted from The Burges via Hales Street and Trinity Street by new one-way system.
