1962 Route

Council House to Willenhall

From the Council House via Earl Street, Jordan Well, Gosford Street, Far Gosford Street and Binley Road, then:

(a) Brandon Road, Willenhall Lane, St James' Lane and Remembrance Road to the terminus. Probable terminus details from road layout:

  • "All passengers alight here" just before Willenhall Shopping Precinct;
  • Bus pulled forward, then swung round at the junction with Robin Hood Road for layover and pick-up in Remembrance Road just beyond the shopping precinct.

(b) Binklow Road to the terminus in Clifford Bridge Road. Probable terminus details from road layout:

  • "All passengers alight here" just past the entrance to the allotments;
  • Bus reversed into entrance to allotments, then turned right back into Clifford Bridge Road for layover and pick-up opposite.

Council House to Glendower Avenue

From the Council House via High Street, Broadgate, Ironmonger Row, The Burges, Corporation Street, Spon Street, Spon End, Allelsley Old Road, Maudslay Road and Whoberley Avenue to the terminus at Glendower Avenue. Known terminus details from personal recollection:

  • "All passengers alight here" at the end of Whoberley Avenue;
  • Bus turned right into Glendower Avenue, reversed, then turned right back into Whoberley Avenue for layover and pick-up.

Maudslay Hotel, Barras Lane, Council House, Gosford Green, Empress Buildings, Stoke Hill Guildhouse and Craven Arms Hotel.

N.B. Service terminated at Binley.

1962

Maudslay Hotel, Craven Street, Barras Lane, Hill Street, Council House, Bramble Street, Kingsway, Raleigh Road, Bromleigh Drive, Gulson Road, Craven Arms Hotel, The Factories Willenhall Lane, Binley Avenue and junction of Willenhall Lane with Remembrance Road.

History of the Route

March 1932

Service 11 introduced as a new service from Pool Meadow to Glendower Avenue via Hales Street, Corporation Street, Fleet Street, Spon Street, Spon End, Allesley Old Road, Maudslay Road and Whoberley Avenue.

July 1937

Diverted away from Pool Meadow to Coventry Railway Station via The Burges/Cross Cheaping, Broadgate, Hertford Street, Warwick Road and Eaton Road, returning via Manor Road and St Patrick's Road.

May 1939

Diverted away from Coventry Railway Station at Broadgate to Copsewood via High Street, Earl Street, Jordan Well, Gosford Street, Far Gosford Street, Gosford Green and Binley Road, turning at Bromleigh Drive.

January 1941

Route between Corporation Street and Gosford Green changed, taking over the Service 5A route to Copsewood via Hales Street, White Street, Primrose Hill Street, Victoria Street, King William Street, Berry Street and Paynes Lane.

November 1941

Service from Glendower Avenue diverted at St John's Church to run via Smithford Street, High Street, Earl Street, Jordan Well, Gosford Street, Far Gosford Street, Gosford Green, Binley Road and Brandon Road to Binley, presumably turning at Willenhall Lane.

November 1947

Service from Glendower Avenue diverted at St John's Church to run into Broadgate via Corporation Street and The Burges/Cross Cheaping as a result of the closure of Smithford Street.

March 1952

On Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, four services per day were diverted at the Craven Arms via Brinklow Road, terminating in Clifford Bridge Road. The location of the terminus is not specified, but buses almost certainly could not have crossed the old hump-backed bridge over the River Sowe.

June 1961

Binley leg extended along Willenhall Lane and St James' Lane to the Willenhall terminus in Remembrance Road. Clifford Bridge Road service increased to run from Monday to Saturday.

June 1962

Eastbound services diverted from Trinity Street via The Burges and Hales Street by new one-way system.

History of the Service Number

July 1937

A new shuttle service 11A was introduced between Pool Meadow and Coventry Railway Station via Hales Street,The Burges/Cross Cheaping, Broadgate, Hertford Street, Warwick Road and Eaton Road, presumably returning via Manor Road and St Patrick's Road.

September 1937

Service 11A diverted via Trinity Street instead of Hales Street and The Burges/Cross Cheaping.

October 1937

Service 11A to Coventry Railway Station was superseded by an extension to Service 6 from Walsgrave and a new Service 11A ran from Pool Meadow to Earlsdon via Trinity Street, Broadgate, Hertford Street, Warwick Road (returning via Warwick Row), Queens Road, The Butts, Albany Road, Earlsdon Street, Radcliffe Road, Rochester Road and Beechwood Avenue, turning at Hartington Crescent.

May 1939

Service 11A was discontinued and replaced by Service 9.
