1962 Route

Broadgate to Earlsdon

From Broadgate via Hertford Street, Warwick Road, Stoneleigh Terrace, Queens Road, Albany Road, Earlsdon Street, Radcliffe Road, Rochester Road and Beechwood Avenue to the terminus at Hartington Crescent. "All passengers alight here" just before the bend in Beechwood Avenue with bus turning in the throat of Hartington Crescent for layover and pick-up opposite. Known terminus details from personal recollection:

Broadgate to Copsewood

From Broadgate via Ironmonger Row, The Burges, Hales Street, White Street, Primrose Hill Street, Victoria Street, King William Street, Berry Street, Paynes Lane and Binley Road to the terminus at Bromleigh Drive.  Known terminus details from personal recollection of CWK205 member:

  • "All passengers alight here" in Bromleigh Drive;
  • Bus reversed right into Momus Boulevard for Layover and pick-up.

Post-1962 Extension

In 1964, Service 9A was created as a peak period extension to the Copsewood destination, along Hipswell Highway and Sewall Highway to the Devonshire Arms. A peak period extension to Service 9 Copsewood was also created, via Princethorpe Way to Ernesford Grange, but the date is uncertain.

History of the Route

October 1937

After the decommissioning of the Earlsdon leg of Tram Service 8, Service 11A ran from Pool Meadow to Earlsdon, running via Trinity Street, Broadgate, Hertford Street, Warwick Road (returning via Warwick Row), Queens Road, The Butts, Albany Road, Earlsdon Street, Radcliffe Road, Rochester Road and Beechwood Avenue, turning at Hartington Crescent.

May 1939

Service 11 extended eastward along Binley Road to the junction with Humber Road and Kingsway.  Service 11A withdrawn and replaced by Service 9 between Earlsdon and Gosford Green.

November 1940

Service 5A introduced as a new Service to replace Tram Service 8 to Copsewood after the tram routes were abandoned because of air raid damage. Service 5A ran from Coventry Railway Station to Copsewood via Eaton Road, Stoneleigh Terrace, Queen Victoria Road, Fleet Street, Corporation Street, Hales Street, White Street, Primrose Hill Street, Victoria Street, King William Street, Berry Street, Paynes Lane, Gosford Green and Binley Road, turning at Bromleigh Drive.

January 1941

Service 11 between Corporation Street and Gosford Green changed, taking over the Service 5A route to Copsewood via Hales Street, White Street, Primrose Hill Street, Victoria Street, King William Street, Berry Street and Paynes Lane. Service 5A withdrawn.

November 1941

Service 9 extended further along Binley Road to the Copsewood terminus at Bromleigh Drive and removed from Pool Meadow after Service 5 curtailed to run between The Hippodrome and Coundon.

June 1962

Eastbound services diverted from Trinity Street via The Burges and Hales Street by new one-way system.

History of the Service Number

June 1928

Service 9 introduced as a new service from Greyfriars Green to Broad Lane (turning at Banner Lane) via Queens Road, The Butts, Spon End, Hearsall Lane and Broad Lane.

October 1931

City terminus moved from Greyfriars Green to the new Pool Meadow. It is unclear whether the new route to Hales Street was via Spon Street and Corporation Street, Queen Victoria Road and Corporation Street or Warwick Road, Hertford Street, Broadgate and Trinity Street.

November 1934

City terminus moved to Broadgate, presumably via Warwick Road and Hertford Street from Greyfriars Green.

May 1938

Service discontinued and replaced by the extension westwards of Service 13.
