Works Services to Rootes Ryton Plant

William Rootes founded the Rootes Group in 1913.  Before WWII, the principle factory for car manufacture was the Humber factory in Humber Road.  Wartime necessitated the establishment of a Shadow factory at Ryton.  After the War, this was the factory where all the Rootes mass car production took place.  The Rootes brands were Hillman, Humber, Sunbeam, Talbot, Commer and Karrier.  Right up until the 1970s, the concrete facade of the Ryton works facing the A45 at Ryton was still painted in camouflage colours (albeit faded by then).
