GKV94 Renovation

The Renovation of GK94

The following text is taken from the Coventry Corporation section of the SCT'61 Website.

GKV94 is Coventry 94, a Daimler CVA6 with a 60 seat Metro-Cammell H31/29R body and was the first post-war bus type delivered to Coventry Corporation and dates from 1950.  In 1970 Smiths of Long Itchington was operating this vehicle on school contracts, still in Coventry maroon but with with the cream over-painted with black.  It went onto a number of preservationists before joining the Roger Burdett collection - and one of the hardest vehicles in his collection to find and photograph.  In fact it has spent many of its later years in storage in Staffordshire.

In 2015 Roger decided to have the vehicle fully restored and it went to Quantock Heritage where it was virtually rebuilt.  They were able to remove some of the Acrow props supporting the structure.  They had to remove most of the rear end woodwork due to woodworm infestation and subsequently burn the affected wood.  None of the middle 4 risers had any metal remaining between the top of the lower saloon windows and bottom of the upper saloon windows.  This was not something that had happened overnight and as wood had been inserted where metal should have been.  The body had obviously been in a poor condition for many years.  The restoration was further hampered by the need to replace the inter-deck flooring.
